Silent reflection for each of the victims of violence within an American city

This is a chronicle of violent homicide within the Wisconsin city of Milwaukee for the year 2015 through the use of silent audio moments. For each incident, a short field recording has been made in its general location. The resulting audio files are then overlaid onto a secondary map creating a sound-map of the city (albeit a deeply depressing one). This sound-map is displayed at http://aporee.org/maps/work/projects.php?project=amomentofsilencemke2015. The raw audio data has been stored at https://archive.org/details/AMomentOfSilenceMilwaukee2015 . All incidents are considered homicides as per FBI UCR standards (unless noted otherwise), with the vast majority the result of gun violence, and African Americans being the primary victims. This post, along with the above mentioned webpages, are to be updated as conditions warrant.

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Review of 2015 Homicide Numbers

At year end the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel published a preliminary review of last year's homicides. Their numbers differ slightly from what is shown in the post "Silent Reflection for Each of the Victims of Violence Within an American City" (see post for details). What follows here is a summary of the Journal-Sentinel findings.

Recent Homicide Numbers

Included here are some figures on past homicide numbers as they relate to Milwaukee. For comparison purposes, a homicide is typically defined by FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) standards (see below). This definition excludes killings from such things as vehicular homicide (specifically pedestrian hit-and-run), self-defense, police shootings, and is why some reported data may vary slightly. (Note: Numbers shown in blog post "Silent reflection for each of the victims of violence within an American city" include such deaths.)

"Homicides can be counted in several ways depending on the definition and intended use of the data. None of these counts provide inaccurate information; they are just different ways to count homicides. The majority of the data included in this report is based on the UCR definition of homicide, the date of incident, and by victim.
